Day 30 of 40 – Thou shalt face your demons

Thou shalt face your demons is Rirou’s favorite punk rule, and in fact that was Rirou’s true essence of his coaching back in the days. That is what made him a good coach.

After Luke was born Rirou indeed wanted to share his coaching but Rirou is different, he likes to keep it real. Which can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. Rirou always said to his athlete before an ironman: “You will face all your demons during the race”, yes an odd thing to say, especially before a race like an ironman. However, that is the truth, an ironman is a race that can take from 8 to 17 hours, and that leaves you 8 to 17 hours with just you and your thoughts. So, by all means you will face your demons.

Every time Rirou have one of those WTF moments in therapy he says “oh shit, that is so fucked up” and they laugh. If you ever been to therapy you know most therapist don’t laugh, but with Rirou was always different. He made made her laugh because he saw how ironic it was that he was trapped in him own matrix. Those ironies of life made him laugh, and that week Rirou had another WTF moment. He was getting ready to face his biggest demons.

The COVID-420, a 40 day full introspection was preparing him to face his biggest demons. Rirou had face many of his demons during his 18 ironmans, but not he was getting to the bottom on how he felt all this time.

The shit is deep, and the reality is you can’t run away otherwise the shit gets deeper. You have to face it. We all have our sets of demons, and the secret for happiness is to face them. That is the 4th punk rule!

Feel Good,

Rirou

Day 19 of 40 – The gift of fatherhood, part 1.

Rirou woke up that Tuesday morning March 30th and he knew it that his world was about to Rock, and for those about to Rock, we salute you. Rirou needed to salute his inner child in order to be a good Dad. You can call him a dick, an a$$hole or even an worthless punk, but he wanted to make it different. Rirou did not want to pass his emotional issues, he wanted to break the cycle. In order to understand that we must go back in time…

It was Festivus day somewhere back in time and Rirou was debating his existence, he went to a friend’s house that just had a baby. After holding and playing the baby for hours Rirou knew it he was ready to be a Dad. However, first Rirou needed to go through his biggest crisis of his life. That was Rirou’s worst crisis but with therapy and time Rirou came back stronger and on Halloween day Luke was conceived.

Rirou decided he was going to do one last ironman. He signed up for Ironman Cozumel, however his mind and soul were in a different place. Rirou was tired of the ironman life. He started the race, and never finished. His lost his water bottle, and rode 25 miles (40km) with no water. He got dehydrated due to the 90 F degree (35 Celsius) weather in Cozumel. Rirou has pushed the limits many times, but this time he did not feel like it. He saw his wife, Luke in the belly and 90% of the race cheating, he said “fuck it! I am done.” Rirou stopped and took the rest of the time in Cozumel as a vacation.

Rirou did not like to quit, he came back home and didn’t train for 4 weeks but he decided to do a local Ironman in Naples Florida in January. He didn’t train much because he just wanted to finish and take the sour feeling from his mouth. Rirou liked local races cause there is less cheating; a local race have at max 400 athletes, and an Ironman race have 2000+ and in theory less drugs. However, on a smaller races he could recognize the athletes that cheated and he talk shit in their face. Rirou is a punk in so many ways, and he did not tolerated that, and he said that loud and clear whenever he felt like it.

Anyways, Rirou did the entire race with Luke’s ultrasound picture with him, he knew that was his last ironman and he was dedicating that race to Luke. Rirou won the race, waited to his athletes to finish and congratulated them. After racing for 10 hours he drove 2 hours because he wanted to go home and stay with his family. He even skipped the podium.

Rirou’s last ironman

A few weeks after that Rirou found out they were having a boy, and he started to build his room. Rirou gave the name idea because he is a big fan of star wars (yeah, it’s not Luke from the bible, it’s from star wars) but Rirou only told his wife about Luke Skywalker character after she already was hooked on the name.

Rirou wanted to be a super present Dad and he knew he needed to talk to Luke as much as he could to build that connection. Dad’s need to build a connection. The mom caries the baby, so they are already connected. Rirou created an email for Luke, and the first e-mail he wrote was about what they were doing in preparation for his arrival. Rirou attached on that e-mail the soundtrack that he used to build Luke’s crib, and how that music touches his heart and how happy music made him feel….

To be continued…

Feel Good,

Rirou

Day 15 of 40 – Brave new world

Rirou woke up that Friday March 27th in a new world, at least for him. Seems like Rirou have finally changed, and he was entering in his new world. His matrix was collapsing and that was only day 15 of his “walk through the desert”, the COVID-19 desert.

Rirou’s favorite concert – Iron Maiden Rock and Rio III 2001- Rirou was there!

After Luke was born Rirou was already in a midlife crisis, which is not a crisis, but the truth is Rirou was sick of triathlon. He loved the sport, but he have had enough and his soul was screaming for a change. People kept telling that he should be life coach, write a book, and make one of those all in one programs like Tony Robbins and shit like that. Even though Rirou like to read that stuff and uses some of “new age” tools he was not a “hero” neither he had a magical formula. Honestly, if you ever seem the ads for life coaching you will understand what Rirou is talking about. It’s perfect people, with a perfect magic formula that will give you an 6 figure income while you sleep, or perfect body by following the “magical formula”. Rirou knew it that life was not like that; for him life is about the good, the bad and the ugly. He knew from coaching experience that everyone is different and unique, so why create a product like that? If he did not believe, of course it would not work.

Now, that Rirou was reconnected with his soul, and he knew it that was not the way to go. Since a very young age Rirou knew it that the world did not need a another hero, another perfect people. The world need more punks, more real people, more people feeling good about themselves. Like Rirou always says: “Nothing is real until you feel it”, and life is about how you feel. Rirou is empowering himself by learning the guitar and how to sing, he is empowering his inner child. That means he has to be a beginner again.

On 02/20/2020 Rirou sang for the first time ever, he knew it sucked, after all he knew the song since he was 15 years old. But singing and playing felt so good that Rirou did not care, he was happy doing it and he wanted to punk the world. As a former triathlete he knew it that a goal without a plan was just a wish, and what could be more punk than writing his own Religion? That day was not a set back, that day was a new world for Rirou, that day the punk was back at work (Ironic, right? a punk at work). He just needed

Anyways, here it is Rirou singing for the first time. The jokes are good, the guitar is bad, and the singing is ugly. However, that made Rirou happy.

Probably the worst cover of Kurt Cobain.

Feel good,

Rirou

Day 12 of 40 – What if I told you is not a midlife crisis.

Rirou woke up that Tuesday March 24th, and he started the day with Yoga and coffee. This is favorite way to wake up, however is not always possible cause Rirou goes to sleep late. Rirou is just like a night owl and he feels empowered under the moon, but it was not always like. A few years back Rirou was a professional triathlete that woke up daily at 5 am, and now, well now it’s a completely different story. Yes, Rirou turns 40 this year but this is not a midlife crisis.

Yesterday was a big break through for Rirou, not only because he did not have a case of the Mondays after all this years, but because something clicked. Rirou was finally at the core of the issue.

Rirou have been wanting to talk about mental health for awhile, since he has been a health coach and an athlete for a long time and he have seen how little we talk about mental/spiritual health. We are all obsess with perfect body and how we look outside, but we almost don’t talk about how we look inside. Yeah, our feelings. Rirou was a good example, and he was punk enough to believe he could talk about it, actually write about it.

The interesting part is that writing for Rirou has always been his weakness. Just to have an idea Rirou always end up in summer class when it came to writing. English was a bit easier, but still. However, writing was the only way Rirou could speak from the heart and that was another life irony. Rirou did the same thing when he decided to became a professional triathlete. He was 24 years old 260 pounds and smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day.

The important thing is that now it was different, Rirou was making real changes at the core of the issue, and that was not a midlife crisis. That was real healing, or like Rirou like to call a rebirth, and this quarantine was helping Riou work deeper inside out. After all being a punk is about attitude, and that was one thing Rirou was good at it, facing his demons.

Feel Good,

Rirou

Day 7 of 40 – The ways of the punk

Rirou woke up on Thursday march 19th feeling like he took 100 pounds of his back, he knows because he lost 100 pounds before, but that is another story. He look in the mirror and smiled, that was a good feeling, he was feeling good. Rirou has always believed in energy, and he did a became a Reiki master after Luke was born, something he wanted to do since 2012. For some reason Rirou has always be attracted to those things such as energy work, because Rirou was sensitive, meaning he have an empath personality.

During his Reiki class he learned that Reiki could potentially re-align yourself with your life purpose, something that Rirou like to call as soul contract. Anyways, he kept going on his Thursday and having lots of fun with Luke, listening to music, dancing, like a typical Thursday. However, they were inside most of the time due to the covid-19 lock down.

Later that day Rirou went to his cave in the garage and he saw all his projects sitting there looking at him. His cave was messy, just like his head. Sure, he felt lighter but his head was messy, just like his cave. It’s weird, because with the weight Rirou could not see that, but now it was clear.

Rirou felt the energy in his cave and it needed to be moved around. The energy was stuck and his projects were talking to his soul, just like in the dream: It’s time to act, and guess what? At that moment Rirou just had another Deja-vu. He started organizing his cave and his visions were getting even more clear.

Rirou always heard in portuguese “voce so faz arte” and if you translate is “you only do art”, but the real meaning is that you are being a Punk, but Punk in this definition:

But being a punk is not like that, and rock was not the devil song. In fact, Rock (specially punk rock) have saved Rirou’s soul. Rirou was no longer angry, and he was ready to teach the ways of the Punk. Rirou was ready to fulfill his destiny, Rirou was ready to rise and his plot to Punk the world just needed to be organized in his head so he could listen to his soul and escape the matrix. He needed to start in the physical level. After all, it’s all connected; the mind, the body, the soul, and the environment. The punk force was strong in Rirou again, a force that he always had it, and Luke brought Rirou the inspiration to teach the ways of the punk…after all the story was already writing in the stars.

Feel Good,

Rirou
